Transgender and Feminism- Intersections and Conflicts.
Are you transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, gender bending, partner of a non-binary gendered person, or a trans-activist? I am interesting in incorporating your thoughts and words into a book that I am writing / editing.
I have noticed a conflict between the second and third waves of feminism when it comes to alternative gender presentations and lifestyles. From my base research, it seems that there is a large number of second wave feminists who feel that a person cannot have an alternative gender presentation, or lifestyle and be a "true" feminist. Further, it seems that some second- wavers feel that trans and alternative gender issues are taking away from the "true" feminist battle of women's rights. I am trying to illustrate that most, if not all, issues of gender oppression and marginalization are relevant to the battle for equal rights and - not only is there room for alternative gender presentations, but a necessity if we are to reach equality. Also, that this lack of recognition is not only harmful to people that are trying to be themselves and be feminists, but to the feminist movement as a whole.
I am also hoping that this book will bring a greater understanding to trans identity, foster discussion, and expand the very small amount of academic literature on the trans topics. So where do my thoughts and words come in to this, you may ask?
In the style of Listen-Up: Voices From the Next Generation of Feminism, I would like have several people submit their personal experiences and feelings on the topic. Submissions are asked to be about 5- 10 double spaced pages, (with the understanding that I will be working with you to edit your submission to fit into the greater flow of the book.) I am looking to represent a wide range of gender experiences including; transgender, transsexual, (FTM, MTF, pre-op or T, post-op or T,) genderqueer, gender bending, androgyny, partner of a non-binary gendered person, trans-activists, any and all racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, ages, religions, spiritualities, etc. If you are interested in submitting
or have ideas that you would like to see represented in this work, please contact me. I would love to hear what people have in mind for their submissions, and I do need to keep a running list of what I can hope to expect from whom. If you are interested, but not sure what you would write, I have a list of questions that may help to kick-start the thought process. I am also more than happy to work with anyone through out the entire writing process. Finally, if this just doesn't sound like your thing, but you have a friend, acquaintance, professor, etc that you think would fit the bill, please forward this to them.
I can be reached via e-mail at Elizabeth.Green@cgu.edu, or by AOL instant message: SoCalLilith. Thank you!!
